Polyaluminium chloride (PAC) is a chemical widely used in water treatment. It is often used to remove suspended matter, turbidity and organic matter from water. The properties of PAC are affected by its basicity, so the determination of basicity is one of the important tasks in the preparation and use of PAC.
Salinity refers to the ratio of OH^-/Cl^-, usually expressed in M value, in PAC. During the preparation of PAC, the degree of polymerization, molecular weight and water solubility of PAC are affected by its salinity, so it is necessary to determine the salinity of PAC accurately. At the same time, in water treatment, the salinity of PAC also affects the key parameters such as flocculation performance, flocculation speed and sedimentation effect, so the determination of salinity is the key step to ensure the water treatment effect.
At present, the commonly used methods for determination of salinity include alkalinity titration, mass spectrometry and conductivity method. Alkalinity titration is one of the commonly used methods. The basic principle of this method is to titrate hydroxide ions in PAC solution with standard acid solution. The basicity of PAC can be calculated by calculating the amount of acid consumed and the concentration of hydroxide ions in PAC.
The specific operation steps of alkalinity titration are as follows:
1. Dissolved PAC sample in distilled water and diluted appropriately to make it conform to the determination conditions.
2. Add phenolphthalein indicator to indicate the acidity and alkalinity of the solution through color change.
3. Titrate the sample with standard acid solution until the color changes from red to pale yellow.
4. Record the droplet amount and sample volume of standard acid solution and calculate the concentration and salinity of hydroxide ion in PAC.
The following points should be noted when determining the salinity:
1. PAC samples should be stirred well to avoid uneven distribution.
2. The concentration of phenolphthalein indicator should be appropriate. Excessive or low concentration will affect the result of measurement.
3. The concentration of standard acid solution and the titration method should be carried out according to the standard procedure to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the determination.
4. Relevant operating regulations should be observed in the determination of salinity.
