Polyferric sulfate (PFS) and polyaluminium chloride (PAC) are two most commonly used flocculants in the field of water treatment at present. In terms of phosphorus removal, both chemicals have certain effects, but in practical application, their phosphorus removal effects may be different.
The advantage of PFS in phosphorus removal is its ability to rapidly precipitate phosphate and remove it from water. In addition, PFS has the ability to inhibit colloidal substances which may hinder the precipitation and removal of phosphate. PFS is also simple to use, only need to be added to the water, can achieve the effect of phosphorus removal.
In contrast, the advantage of PAC in phosphorus removal is that it can form relatively stable flocculants with phosphate in water and aggregate them into larger particles from water, thus facilitating sedimentation or filtration. PAC can also inhibit the formation of colloidal substances to some extent, but its inhibiting ability may be inferior to that of PFS.
In order to compare the effects of these two chemicals on phosphorus removal, some researchers carried out experiments. They used different dosages and pH values to compare the phosphorus removal effects of PFS and PAC. The experimental results show that the phosphorus removal effect of PFS is better than that of PAC at pH 7.5. When pH value is 9.0, the phosphorus removal effect of PAC is better than that of PSF. In addition, the experiment also found that when the dosage was 20 mg/L, PAC had the best phosphorus removal effect. When the dosage is 15 mg/L, the phosphorus removal effect of PFS is the best.
In general, PFS and PAC have certain effects on phosphorus removal, but their effects are affected by many factors, including pH value, dosage, etc. Therefore, in practical application, proper flocculant and dosage should be selected according to water quality characteristics and treatment process to achieve the best phosphorus removal effect.
